Compression socks - reduce the likelihood of sports injuries

One of the most important elements of venous health is good circulation, particularly in the legs where poor circulation can lead to a range of problems including spider veins, varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and even deep vein thrombosis (DVT), compression socks work by applying gentle but constant pressure to the legs, forcing blood to flow upwards through the deep veins and back to the heart.

Although most people think of vein problems as a disease of the elderly, modern compression socks for women are worn by people of all ages. For example, many athletes wear compression garments to help them perform at their best and promote faster recovery, while frequent travellers such as airline pilots use them to combat DVT problems. Mothers-to-be also wear women's compression socks to help manage the risk of leg swelling during pregnancy.

Compression stockings can prevent leg fatigue and pain. They have also been shown to reduce swelling in the legs, feet and ankles and can prevent - and to some extent treat - troublesome and annoying varicose and spider veins. They can even prevent you from feeling dizzy or light-headed when standing.

So how long should you wear compression socks men? In reality, it depends on your condition. For mild cases, you may only want to wear them for a few hours a day to maintain blood circulation. Or, for more complex or severe vein problems, they may need to be worn all day. Avoid wearing compression socks at night while sleeping unless prescribed by your doctor. Compression stockings essentially take blood away from the feet, which can block blood flow when lying prone.
