The essential ceiling light for the home

One of the questions I am often asked is how do I choose fixtures that coordinate with each other? When you can see multiple fixtures throughout a space, as is the case in many of our homes these days - whether it's a living room open to the dining room, a kitchen open to the dining room, or even a completely open area.

The directions you can go and the combinations you can choose from are endless, but my aim today is to keep things simple and to provide some 'tips' and guidelines that you can follow when selecting light fittings for your home. Even if you don't have an open floor plan, it's good to have a cohesive overall scheme throughout your home. Setting some 'boundary conditions' will help guide you in finding new fixtures and narrowing down your search so you're not overwhelmed with options ...... There's plenty out there!

How to create an overall LED ceiling light plan.
Start by listing the outdoor ceiling light you need.
Walk around your home and find out where you need new fixtures and what type of fixtures you need. You will find that some spaces can only accommodate one type of fixture, while others are more flexible. For example, if you have 8ft ceilings, you may only be able to use recessed mounts - or semi-recessed mounts - for overhead lighting in many of your rooms, meaning you can narrow your search and exclude fixtures such as low-hanging pendants or chandeliers (except for dining tables, of course!).

Determine the general style/design direction of your fixtures.
Use the style of décor you use as the basis for choosing your fixtures and once you've figured that out, the easiest thing to do is to stick with fixtures that fit into those style categories and keep the theme in your home. There are certainly ways to make a more eclectic mix look better, but I think for most people, keeping it simple is the key to success!

Choose your metal finishes.
I love mixing metals, but if you're not confident with this or prefer to stick to a single finish, just choose one and keep it handy! You'll see I've done this in my example whole house lighting plan starter and you really can't go wrong.

Choose a fixture with similar 'lines' and 'feel'.
I admit, this part is more of an art, so it's not so easy to understand! Often, if you can replicate design elements from one fixture to another, it helps a ton to have a cohesive look.

What I love about these is that they all work well together and you can mix and match them throughout your home! I hope they are helpful to you when buying your own home.
