V-Cutters - for perfect cigar cutting

There's more than one way to cut a cigar. Whether you're using a guillotine cutter or a punch or cigar cutter, there's really no wrong way to cut your favourite stick. In a pinch, you can even use your fingernail or, if you want to look stronger, simply bite off the end.

The key to getting a nice cut is to understand how cigars are made. You thought smoking a cigar was all about sitting back and relaxing with a quality smoke, didn't you? You hardly know that there is a whole new world to learn. Cigars are made up of three parts: the filler, the binder and the wrapper.

When wrapping a cigar, you can use what is called a cap to complete the cigar. This is a small leaf of the wrapper that is swirled around the head a number of times. When you look at your smoke, you will usually see a line that tells you where the cap ends. The key to any good cigar cut is to stay above this line, cut the cigar off too much and you risk the wrapper leaf coming apart on you. While this can still be smoked, fighting with the cigar is far less fun. The binder is the leaf used to hold the filler together and is the layer between the filler and the wrapper. When using a hole punch you need to make sure that you can get not only through the wrapper but also through the flipchart.

The best known cutter is the guillotine. Not only is this perfect for decapitating people in pre-Renaissance France, but it is now a wonderful design for cutting the back end of cigars. The key to any good cutter is the sharpness of the blade and the speed with which it passes through the wrapper and flipchart.

Another very popular method of cutting cigars is by punching a hole. There is a circular blade for making round cuts at the end. The trick to using a perforator is not simply to push it all the way through. This will lead to cracking and splitting. You need to turn the blade slowly while applying a small amount of pressure. This may seem like a chore, but no one said smoking cigars was easy. The result is one of our favourite types of cut. You can get all different sizes of punches, and obviously the bigger the ring gauge, the bigger the punch you might want.

The cigar punch is an increasingly popular style of cut. You can think of it as a genetic mutation with a punch through a guillotine. Shaped much like a guillotine, the cut is made with a blade that falls on the tobacco. Unlike a standard guillotine cutter, the blade is shaped like a 'V', and instead of taking the whole head off the stick, it leaves a channel for the smoke to pass through. The idea is that this opens the cigar more than a fist, but the V-shaped channel does push the smoke to where you can best taste it.

Other than this, there are other methods, such as cigar scissors to cut the head of the cigar you want to enjoy, but they are all just variations on the same theme as the three listed above. One of the great advantages of the more expensive cutters is not only the sharpness of the blades. You want your smoke to be a pleasure, not a chore, and the right V-Cut cigar cutter will certainly help you achieve the end result.
