A wide selection of hose nozzles

For the gardener, a hose can be an essential piece of kit, making the task of watering the garden much easier than lifting a heavy spray can back and forth over the tap. Choosing the right hose depends on the size of your garden, the amount of time you spend watering and, of course, your budget.

How to choose the best garden hose?
It's best to buy a hose pipe that is kink, twist and crush resistant - there's nothing worse than an untangled hose pipe that will eventually cause the rubber to crack and leak. It's also worth considering the job you'll be using it for.

There's no better way to work out the length you need than to get out a tape measure. Starting from the tap, measure the maximum distance needed to reach the bottom of your garden and add a little so the hose doesn't stretch completely. As tempting as it may be, avoid using a longer than needed garden hose as, as well as being more expensive, it adds unnecessary extra weight and is more bulky to store. Some expandable hoses can be joined together to give extra length - you will need to buy special adapters - and again, smooth rubber hoses can be cut to length if required.

Finally, while colour seems to be an aesthetic choice, if you are displaying your garden hose on your patio you may want to choose the colour that best suits your scheme. Alternatively, a brightly coloured hose is more visible and therefore less likely to be run over by cars or machinery.

What accessories are available?
Although nozzles or spray guns are not essential - using your finger on the tip of the hose to adjust the water flow works well - they are practical. Some hoses come with these accessories, which usually makes them good value for money. However, there are many accessories that can be purchased separately. It's also worth checking that the connectors that come with the hose are "universal", meaning they can be fitted to any hose or any accessory - a benefit if you are replacing the hose but don't want to buy a new one, in the case of the gun. Connectors are usually made of plastic or brass, and although there are different grades of plastic, it's fair to say that brass connectors will be the most durable. Generally speaking, a textured outer layer is more securely attached to the tap connector than a smooth alternative.

Typically, hose pipe consists of layers of vinyl, polyurethane and rubber, often reinforced with nylon or metal mesh. Expandable hoses come with a tough woven fabric cover that allows them to expand and contract. On the whole, cheaper hoses have fewer layers, which can affect their strength and durability over time. Whereas rubber hoses can easily kink or even knot, expandable hoses and their fabric covers are designed to resist kinking and knotting.
